Fire cider is a traditional tonic that contains immune-boosting herbs and ingredients. Typically, it’s very spicy and warming and made before cold and flu season which is in the winter. The combination of immune-boosting herbs and ingredients prepares your body for the extra ailments that come during this season. The spicy qualities of the fire cider come from warming ingredients. Not only do these ingredients increase the potency of the tonic, but the heating qualities also warm the body. Your body will be physically soothed by the warming effects of the cider.
Fire cider can be made literally hundreds of different ways and through many different methods. To make this herbal fire cider recipe, we use the folk herbalism method.
This fire cider recipe uses the “folk herbalism” method. Folk herbalism is a traditional practice that is typically used by beginner herbalists. The methods are is since it’s a simple technique and method to follow. According to Herbal Academy, when practicing folk herbalism, “there is no difficult math involved, you use what you have on hand, and no extra equipment is needed”. This method makes it easy for beginner (and advanced) herbalists to quickly make high-quality, healthy recipes, easily and effectively.
Pretty much every fire cider has the following six ingredients, horseradish, oranges, jalapeños, onion, garlic, and apple cider vinegar. The horseradish is the most prominent flavor in the fire cider since it’s extremely potent and spicy. Horseradish is naturally anti-bacterial which is perfect for this tincture.
To make the herbal fire cider, you chop up ratios of these ingredients, infuse them with apple cider vinegar, and place them in a mason jar. Then, set the mason jar in a cool dark place for at least two weeks. I usually let mine sit for longer to absorb more of the beneficial ingredients. With these base ingredients, you can be as creative as you want. Up next, I’ll explain how I supercharged my herbal fire cider recipe.
The goal of fire cider is to pack as many vitamins and nutrients as possible into a small tonic you can take easily to ward off illness. In my opinion, nothing is more delicious & potent than elderberries. Elderberries by themselves are great for boosting immunity. They are extremely rich in Vitamin C. I decided to take their healing properties and put them in the fire cider.
I also added pomegranate. The pomegranates add a slight boost of Vitamin C but also add a little sweetness and tang that work well with the base ingredients. This sweetness balances out the spice that the fire cider contains.
I also added rosehips, limes, lemons, ginger, thyme, rosemary, turmeric root, black pepper, and honey. All of these ingredients contain immune-boosting properties and a variety of different vitamins and minerals.
We’ve discussed the immune-boosting properties of fire cider. However, there are other benefits as well. The spice from the fire cider warms the body and increases blood circulation. The powerful horseradish and jalapeño can quickly clear congestion if you are feeling under the weather. The apple cider vinegar and other ingredients increase digestion. Combined, the fire cider is a potent, all-in-one solution to help aid your body during the challenges of the cold and flu season.
