Following the cycles of the moon has a profoundly grounding effect on the mind, heart, and nervous system, especially in this chaotic and disconnected world.
If you’re a sensitive person, an inner work practitioner, or a spiritual seeker, and want to anchor your life within the rhythms of the moon’s energy, take this as your sign to get started.
With June’s strawberry full moon coming up, we have the opportunity to focus on all matters to do with the heart, as strawberries are symbolic of love, passion, and the sweetness of life.
(By the way, if you follow astrology, you can incorporate that here. But I’ve chosen to keep this guide simple and focused.)
The name Strawberry Moon comes from the Algonquin, Dakota, Ojibwe, and Lakota indigenous peoples to describe the time of year when ripe strawberries were ready to be harvested.
Other names for this time of year are the Berries Ripen Moon (Haida), Blooming Moon (Anishinaabe), and the Mead or Rose Moon in the Celtic tradition.
Symbols:
As I explore in the Moon Alchemy Journal, the full moon is symbolic of harvest, revelation, culmination, clarity, truth, exposure, shadow work, abundance, fruition, illumination, balance, and amplification.
Strawberries are symbolic of vitality (the red color), fecundity, sensuality, love (shaped like a heart and connected to Venus), beauty, childhood, innocence, purity, prosperity, and spiritual development.
As we can see, the Strawberry moon is very much symbolically connected to working with the heart chakra and anything that blocks the flow of giving and receiving love.
Overall, on a spiritual and symbolic level, the Strawberry full moon is an invitation to explore your relationship with joy, pleasure, play, abundance, and your inner child.
Here are some simple ideas to bring clarity and healing to your life this month:
Every full moon is a chance to gain extra clarity and insight into your authentic dreams, desires, and obstacles.
A couple of my favorite full moon journaling prompts in the Moon Alchemy Journal are:
Start with one of these questions and see what comes to the surface.
“Playing” may sound like a juvenile waste of time, but studies have shown that play increases flexibility, optimism, problem-solving skills, emotional regulation, and more.
So the question here is, how playful are you? If you’ve lost touch with the ability to play, how can you introduce that back into your life?
The key here is to listen to your inner child, and the Strawberry Full Moon is a powerful opportunity to do that.
Think back to what you used to love doing as a child and try to sprinkle that into life again.
For example, if you love to color, why not get an adult coloring book? If you like to climb trees, why not go on more nature walks? If you love to watch cartoons, why not introduce that into your daily relaxation routine? Play is healing and a crucial form of self-care.
As the Strawberry Full Moon is connected to love, sensuality, and spiritual development, this is an ideal time to do some heart-centered shadow work.
Ask yourself:
Consider creatively expressing what is on your mind and heart through writing, drawing, dancing, singing, or any other form of self-expression. This simple act can free you of the heavy weight of unprocessed and unexpressed pain.
Generally speaking, there are two types of people: those who are more on the hedonistic side of the spectrum (pleasure-seeking) and those who are more ascetic (pleasure-denying). Neither is better nor worse than the other. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
I subscribe to the “middle path” philosophy: we need a little bit of both to find inner balance and harmony.
So take a moment to consider where you fall on this pleasure spectrum. Do you actively seek out pleasure, or does pleasure make you feel uncomfortable?
This Strawberry Moon is an invitation to bring in more of the opposing quality – for a hedonist, that means more asceticism, and vice versa.
Denying pleasure can help us to transcend the body’s desires and focus on spiritual pursuits, and accepting pleasure can help us to get grounded in the body and life’s delights.
On the days leading up to the Strawberry full moon, why not experiment with the opposite quality you’re used to (aka, being more hedonistic or ascetic) and see what ripples of change that brings in your life?
As someone going through immense shifts in life right now (being a new mother = chaos galore), anchoring my life in the moon’s cycles has been a form of ritualized self-reflection, self-care, and sanity.
If you feel adrift, ungrounded, or unsure how to organize your days, weeks, and months, why not follow the cycles of the moon?
May this Strawberry Moon bless you with joy, beauty, and a loving reconnection with yourself and others.
